New Use Innovation

Each year, the Student Soybean Innovation Competition allows Purdue students to use their abilities and creativity develop innovative new products made from soybeans. Since 1994, past winners have included soy excipient, denture cream, and soybean crayons.

The contest aims to celebrate the talents of budding sustainable product innovators who have developed “new uses” for soybeans or their components. Students work in teams with two faculty advisors to:

  • Brainstorm product ideas
  • Create a production timeline
  • Conduct patent searches
  • Develop a market analysis
  • Document the technical process of creating their product or material
  • Design packaging
  • Market their product or material

The competition begins in September and projects are completed in March and are judged and scored based on product viability, presentation and possibility for commercialization.
